What We Believe
At Fifth Street Baptist Church, our beliefs are firmly rooted in the Word of God. We hold the Bible as our final authority in all matters of faith and practice. Our desire is to glorify God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and live faithfully as His people. The following statements summarize the core truths we believe and teach.

God
We believe there is one living and true God, who is eternal and sovereign. He is the Creator of all things and rules with wisdom, love, and justice. God exists in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—equal in essence yet distinct in role.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
Deuteronomy 6:4 — “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”
-
Isaiah 45:5 — “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.”
-
Matthew 28:19 — “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully man. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, and revealed God perfectly. He died on the cross as the substitute for our sins, was buried, and rose bodily from the grave. He ascended to heaven, where He now intercedes for believers, and He will return in power and glory to judge the world and establish His kingdom.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
John 1:1, 14 — “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”
-
Luke 1:35 — “…that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
-
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 — “…Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
-
Hebrews 7:25 — “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
-
Revelation 19:11 — “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”

The Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is fully God and actively at work today. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He regenerates and indwells all believers, empowering them for holy living, guiding them into truth, equipping them with spiritual gifts, and sealing them until the day of redemption.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
John 16:8 — “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
-
Titus 3:5 — “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”

-
Ephesians 1:13 — “…after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”

The Bible
We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, without error in its original manuscripts. It is the final authority for faith and life, teaching us who God is, how to know Him, and how to live in obedience to Him. All Scripture points us to Jesus Christ as the center of God’s revelation.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
2 Timothy 3:16 — “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
-
2 Peter 1:21 — “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
-
John 5:39 — “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

Salvation
We believe that salvation is a gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ alone. We are saved by His death and resurrection, not by our works or human effort. Those who repent of sin and trust in Christ are forgiven, born again by the Spirit, and given eternal life. Salvation is secure in Christ and should lead to a life of obedience, holiness, and service.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
Ephesians 2:8–9 — “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
-
John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
-
Romans 10:9 — “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
-
John 10:28 — “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

The Church
We believe that the Church is the body of Christ, made up of all believers everywhere. Each local church is an expression of that body, called to gather for worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship, and the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The mission of the Church is to proclaim the gospel, make disciples of all nations, and live as a light in the world until Christ returns.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
1 Corinthians 12:27 — “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
-
Acts 2:42 — “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
-
Matthew 28:19–20 — “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
-
Philippians 2:15 — “…that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.”

Leadership
Elders
We believe that the office of elder (also called pastor or overseer) is a biblical position of spiritual leadership in the church. Elders are responsible to shepherd the flock of God through preaching, teaching, prayer, and pastoral care. They are called to lead by example, exercising oversight with humility, not for personal gain, but to glorify Christ and edify the church.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
1 Timothy 3:1–2 — “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach.”
-
Titus 1:5–6 — “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city… If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.”
-
Acts 20:28 — “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
-
1 Peter 5:2–3 — “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.”

Deacons
We believe that the office of deacon is a biblical position of service in the church. Deacons are called to assist the elders by caring for the practical needs of the congregation, supporting the unity of the body, and freeing the elders to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word. Deacons must be men of dignity, integrity, and faith, who lead by serving.
Scripture References (KJV):
-
Acts 6:3–4 — “Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.”
-
1 Timothy 3:8–9 — “Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.”
-
1 Timothy 3:13 — “For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
